‘Izzy Virtual Assistant’ was conceived as I was finishing my undergraduate degree and COVID-19 was in full swing. I wanted an online career that untethered me from a specific location and gave me real satisfaction. I’ve helped my family and friends with admin tasks for many years, in part because I’m very comfortable with IT, but also because I’m just one of life’s naturally organised people. I feel joy when I create order from chaos. Whilst at school and university, I’d often step up to help organise events and complete tasks. My dad, a Director of Operations, observed these qualities in me and made the very sensible suggestion that I looked into being a Virtual Assistant (VA).
As a child, other than arranging all of my books in alphabetical order, my true love was the animal kingdom. I used to tell people I wanted to be David Attenborough when I grew up! My degree in Animal Behaviour & Welfare sounds unusual but is, in essence, a specialist Biology degree. I’ve taken every opportunity to volunteer with animals, including spending three months in Italy working on a bear conservation project. Even in Italy, my organising brain didn’t turn off. After realising there was an issue with coordinating volunteers’ data, I created a cloud database for all volunteers and staff to input their animal observations. This allowed researchers to quickly identify trends in animal appearances.
Although the world of animals is still important to me and I will never stop loving and caring for animals, at this point in my life, I’m focusing on developing my business skills. I can’t think of a better way to do that than to work with entrepreneurs and small business leaders, learning their systems and processes and helping them to free up their time so they can focus on their next winning move. The flexibility of this work also means I can continue to volunteer in animal shelters and wildlife parks and I definitely see that as a win-win!
