If you’ve ever thought business just isn’t for you, same.
When I was a kid, I always said I wanted to be David Attenborough. Then I realised that though David is amazing, he doesn’t actually spend a lot of time with the animals and I wanted a more hands on experience. So then I wanted to be a vet but as it turns out, I pass out when I see blood so that was out of the question.
Then there was a brief period of time I wanted to be a psychologist, but after talking with my therapist mother for a while I decided actually I did not want to work in that field. So I went back to animals and decided it would be animal behaviour I would study at university,
If you haven’t already noticed, none of those career ideas sound even slightly like what I do now as a self employed virtual assistant.
In fact, I’d never even considered running a business.
I thought that people who ran businesses had to be good with numbers (I’m not), wore suits (I don’t), and lived in cities (I’m a country girl).
It’s kind of ironic that these were the impressions I had of business owners because all four of my parents are self employed and none of them fit all of those stereotypes. Although my dad and stepdad are both good with numbers.
But even with these great influences I still had these self imposed beliefs about what a business owner was and should be.
As you can imagine, when I found myself in the position of becoming said business owner in 2020 I was a little confused as to how I’d even run my business considering I was definitely none of the things I thought I should be.
But thank goodness for the amazing community of heart centred businesswomen I found on Instagram because with their inspiration and the guidance from my parents I found the sweet spot where I realised not only could I run a business but actually I could run a highly successful business!
My life is so different from what I pictured. I imagined a regular job, getting a salary, allotted holiday time, weekend shifts, and working over holidays.
Now my life is choosing my own clients, choosing my own hours, choosing my work, choosing my holiday, it’s freedom!
I’m so grateful for the life I have even though it’s not what I expected.
