I consider myself very lucky as I get to work with clients every day who inspire me and who I can learn from.
One of my lovely clients Caroline Leon of Soulful Strategist introduced me to the world of conscious business. This was something that I already felt in my heart but didn’t have a name for.
I felt it in my dislike of common sales tactics I was being asked my clients to implement. I felt it in my uncomfortableness with clients who were hyper focused on money and making more money from people. And I felt it in the falseness of the statements being made about running a business by other business owners.
When I started working with Caroline I realised why it was that I felt all of these things. It’s because so many common business practices are unethical, unrealistic and unpleasant. However, as business owners, we have been told these things over and over again, told it’s the only way to succeed, that everyone’s doing it, it becomes normalised. When it never should have been.
Through Caroline, I learned about Tad Hargrave of Marketing for Hippies, George Kao and also the ethical move. All of these great businesses focus on teaching other business owners ethical, conscious, soulful business and marketing strategies.
I’ve always run my own business in a way that feels right to me. Because I’m someone with quite an aggressive internal ethical compass I’ve avoided any practices for myself that didn’t align.
However, as I’m a Virtual Assistant I also work within many many other people’s businesses. And through that, I’ve taken part in quite a few things that ethically, didn’t sit right with me.
And recently I’ve been thinking. It doesn’t matter how ethically I run my own business if I’m still happy to turn around and do something that I don’t agree with just because that person is paying me to, just because it’s not my business.
I‘ve now made a commitment not just to continue to practice ethical and conscious business for myself but to also feed that into my client work.
- I will challenge practices that I don’t agree with
- I will question tactics that I find icky.
- I will share resources that have helped me
