Recently I got extremely excited by a slice of apple pie which lead me to a very important realisation.
Now, this all starts out because my boyfriend and I made an agreement that we would start to go out and try a new restaurant at least once a month. We live in a capital city and the food options are amazing so we felt like we needed to be making the most of this.
Plus, we love food. Like really love food. But we felt like we’d gotten into a bit of a rut of getting the same takeaways and going to the same places over and over. Just because we know we like them and know there are options for both of us (I’m vegan).
So we thought this idea would pull us out of our food slump, help us get to know the city we’re living in more AND try loads more food which is always a massive plus.
We had a couple of ideas about where we wanted to go but nothing booked in yet.
Until I found where we 100% needed to go.
I’m on a vegan group for the city I live in and all anyone was talking about was this pub in Wales that had totally veganised the entire menu for veganuary. Now if you’re not familiar with British pubs all I can say is this is extremely surprising.
So obviously we HAD to go. Jump to our Friday night and we drive 30min to this pub in a very cute location. It’s unassuming and definitely doesn’t scream THIS IS A VEGAN ESTABLISHMENT.
But oh my god, the choice on the menu was so ridiculously good I couldn’t believe it.
Usually, when I go for food at a pub I have one maybe two options but this was insane. I’m a very decisive person, I trust my gut and can make snap decisions under a lot of pressure. But here I was, sat in this pub literally unable to choose There were so many things I wanted!
The menu had tonnes of normal veggie/vegan stuff but also a load of veganised classic pub meals. Which was so exciting. There were some dishes on there that I literally never expected to have again!
The most exciting thing of all though was a whole load of vegan desserts!
So this is where the excitement about the apple pie came from.
For some people, this may not be a big deal but it got me thinking.
If we counted up all of the small things that make us smile or bring us joy throughout the day and we focused on remembering them and honouring them, we’d be so busy that the meh things or the bad things would seem insignificant in comparison.
I want to challenge you to spend the day noticing the small things. Get a notepad or a notes page on your phone and every time something makes you chuckle or smile or just gives you that little rush of joy, write it down.
Then at the end of the day before bed, review it and remind yourself of all those happy moments and go to sleep thinking about them.
So what’s something small that you noticed today that brought you joy?
