This article is for people that are thinking about becoming self-employed to give you an honest look into the positives and negatives. But it’s also for those that are already self-employed. If you feel these negatives too, you’re not alone!

Positives:

  • I have the freedom to work whatever hours I want during the day. I have control of my schedule.
  • I have the freedom to choose my own clients and who I work with.
  • I have the ability to decide what type of work I want to do. Which tasks I take on and what direction I want to take my business.
  • I don’t have to answer to anyone about decisions or choices.
  • I can wear whatever I want to work. Whether it’s a PJ day or if I fancy dressing up, I’m in control.
  • I can take breaks whenever I want (half an hour biscuit and reading break, yes please!)
  • I can decide on my own holiday. I don’t need to check if someone has it booked off or not.
  • All the work is for just me. I am working for the benefit of myself and my clients, not some big company. The money I earn goes into my pocket and the work I do goes directly to my clients.

These are some wonderful positives and I’m sure there’s many more.

But here are some of the negatives:

  • The workday doesn’t start and end easily. There’s not a ‘quitting time’ and it can be difficult to put a pin in work. You have to be strict with your boundaries.
  • There’s always something to do. Whether it’s client work or work on your own business, the to-do list is never-ending.
  • It’s a lot of pressure. Everything is on you.
  • Your income is often varied and unpredictable.
  • If you don’t do it (or pay someones else to do it) it won’t get done.
  • Everything is personal.
  • It’s difficult to turn your brain off from the business. Even when you’re supposed to be relaxing it can be hard to switch off.

Even though these negatives can be difficult, I wouldn’t change it for the world. In my opinion, the positives outweigh the negatives.

What do you think?
